World Languages

World languages and cultures curricula cultivate linguistic proficiency and global citizenship. They build critical cognitive skills, promote empathy, and directly enhance college admissions, as many four-year universities require 2 to 3 years of study. They also prepare students for an interconnected international marketplace

German 1 A & B

Prerequisite: None
Grade Level(s): 9, 10, 11, 12
German 1 students learn to understand, speak, read and write in the simple language necessary to reach the Novice High Proficiency level. This includes the use of short sentences and questions in everyday conversations, as well as a study of German-speaking countries. This class is subject to enrollment and is typically offered every other school year in even numbered years. Two years of the same world language are required for admission to the Oregon University System.

Spanish 1 A & B

Length of Class: Year / 1.0 credit – NCAA Approved
Prerequisite: None
Grade Level(s): 9, 10, 11, 12
This course is an introduction to beginning vocabulary and language structures, as well as the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Students will become increasingly proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language in the context of real life situations. Vocabulary and grammar will be acquired through comprehensible input, repetition, partner and group conversations, games and songs, as well as listening, reading, and writing activities. The course lays the groundwork for entering the College Now pathway of earning college credit at the consecutive levels of Spanish language study. Two years of the same world language are required for admission to the Oregon University System. Note: Priority enrollment for grades 9 and 11.

German 2 A & B

Prerequisite: German 1 B
Grade Level(s): 10, 11, 12
German 2 students communicate more using the language within the classroom and by practicing other practical situations. Students also apply the language to learn more about the German- speaking countries from authentic sources (exchange students, travel brochures, music, etc.). In addition, the ability to ask and answer simple questions during an interview will place students at the Intermediate Low Proficiency level. This class is subject to enrollment and is typically offered every other school year in odd numbered years.

College Now Spanish 2 (Spanish 101)

Length and Credit: Year / 1.0 credit – NCAA Approved
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 A&B / Heritage speakers may place by oral exam
Grade Level(s): 10, 11, 12
This course is a review and continuation of beginning vocabulary and language structures from Spanish 1. Students will become increasingly proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language in the context of real life situations. Vocabulary and grammar will be acquired through comprehensible input, repetition, partner and group conversations, games and songs, as well as listening, reading, and writing activities. The culture and geography of the many Spanish-speaking countries are explored in more detail. Upon successful completion of this course students will earn 5 hours of Spanish 101 (full year) level credit through Lane Community College. Note, there is a high school (non-college credit option) built into the course for students who prefer this route.

College Now Spanish 3 (Spanish 102)

Prerequisite: College Now Spanish 2
Grade Level(s): 10, 11, 12
This course is a review and continuation of vocabulary and language structures. Students will become increasingly proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language in the context of real life situations. Vocabulary and grammar will be acquired through comprehensible input, repetition, partner and group conversations, games and songs, as well as listening, reading, and writing activities. Students begin to converse about a variety of everyday topics with fewer unnatural pauses and work on projects including foreign travel and study. The culture and geography of the many Spanish-speaking countries continues to be explored. Upon successful completion of this course students will earn 5 hours of Spanish 102 (full year) level credit through Land Community College. There is a high school (non-college credit option) built into the course for students who prefer this route.

College Now Spanish 4 (Spanish 103)

Prerequisite: College Now Spanish 3
Grade Level(s): 11, 12
This is an intermediate level course with intensive review of grammatical structures and growth of vocabulary. The course emphasizes oral communication and listening comprehension in a culturally authentic context. Students will continue developing reading and writing skills through compositions. Upon successful completion of this course students will earn 5 hours of Spanish 103 (full year) level credit through Land Community College.
