State Testing Data Shows Springfield Students Make Gains; More Work Left to be Done

The Oregon Department of Education has released statewide assessment results for the 2024–25 school year, and Springfield Public Schools (SPS) is seeing encouraging growth across subjects.

The results, which are available on the state website, focus on three key subject areas – English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. SPS, along with other districts throughout the state, uses the test results and other performance data to measure how well the education system is serving students and determine how best to support them moving forward.
Springfield students showed steady progress compared to the prior year.

In reading, for example, 3rd graders improved from 30.8% meeting grade-level standards to 38%, and 6th graders rose from 36.8% to 40.8%. In math, 3rd graders climbed from 30.3% to 35.5% and 6th graders moved from 22.5% to 26%. Science results also improved slightly, with 11th graders moving from 31.3% to 32.2%.

The District will carefully examine the data in more detail over the coming months to guide targeted supports where they’re needed most. Some Springfield schools outpaced the state in certain areas, while others did not, and those differences will be important to understand as next steps are planned.

Assistant Superintendent David Collins praised the District’s progress while acknowledging there is more work to be done:

“These results reflect the hard work of our students and staff, along with our emphasis on strong teaching and learning support, paired with trusted instructional materials and practice,” said Collins. “We’re encouraged to see improvement across reading, science, and math assessments, but we know there is more work to be done. With continued focus and persistence, we look forward to building on this progress and look forward to seeing even stronger results in the years ahead.”

Looking forward, SPS remains committed to creating school environments that are welcoming, supportive, and filled with opportunities to learn. The District is focused on making sure every student, every day, has the resources and encouragement they need to grow and succeed.
