Thurston Band Program Earns ESB Outreach Partnership

Thurston Band Program Earns ESB Outreach Partnership
Itzel Becerra Mejia

The Thurston High School's Band and Orchestra Program, under the direction of Conor Egan, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Eric Hammer Memorial Community Outreach Program through the Eugene Symphonic Band (ESB).

After acceptance, Egan was quick to emphasize that the recognition reflects the strength of the Thurston High School music program as a whole.

The Eugene Symphonic Band is a regional community ensemble made up of musicians from Eugene, Springfield, and surrounding communities. Each year, ESB selects one middle or high school in the region to partner with through the Eric Hammer Memorial Community Outreach Program, an initiative designed to support local music education and encourage students to pursue lifelong passions with music.

As part of the partnership, the selected school receives several opportunities and resources, including:

  • A shared concert performance with the Eugene Symphonic Band
  • A donation to support the school’s music program
  • A director clinic with the band instructor
  • Coaching and mentorship from ESB musicians working directly with students

The partnership is especially meaningful for Egan, who is also a performing member of the Eugene Symphonic Band, making the collaboration a unique opportunity to connect community musicians with the next generation of performers.
